Uptown New Orleans has a new destination for sunshine and relaxation. Sunnies, a vibrant restaurant and poolside retreat, has opened at 4917 Freret Street, blending the laid-back charm of Palm Springs with the creative energy of New Orleans. The new venue serves as a stylish oasis for locals, offering cocktails, small plates, and a resort-like setting that feels far from the bustle of the city.
Owners Barrett Cooper and Zach Kupperman created Sunnies to capture the feel of a boutique hotel without guest rooms. The goal was to design a community space that encourages guests to unwind and socialize, with the comfort and design of a vacation getaway. Kupperman, a developer known for his work on The Drifter Hotel, and Cooper, who works in commercial real estate, joined forces to turn the idea into reality.
The restaurant’s menu, led by bar director Jake LeBas and chef de cuisine Mike Oozoonian, includes playful and eclectic options such as vegan crab cakes made from hearts of palm and potato, Spam sliders, duck la orange meatballs, coconut shrimp, and curly fries. The selection is complemented by creative cocktails, including a pickle-flavored drink that has already become a talking point among visitors. Guests can also enjoy salads, ceviche, and wagyu sliders, making Sunnies a versatile stop for both casual snacks and full meals.
Sunnies has faced some opposition from a nearby property owner who objected to the inclusion of a pool. However, city officials confirmed that the establishment meets requirements as a restaurant that happens to feature a pool rather than a commercial swimming facility. The restaurant continues to operate without interruption, maintaining its role as a gathering place for the Freret Street community.
Plans for expansion are already being discussed, with future locations likely to open in other states. For now, the New Orleans flagship offers locals a chance to escape into a world of bright colors, cool water, and good food, all without leaving the city.
